FOODLY

BRIEF

After selecting a theme (food, travel, weather, fitness or medical). Find a problem based on the theme that can be solved with a simple low-fidelity mobile application. Then, create the app landing web page. All the above within a 2 week period.

MY ROLE

This was an individual project. My focus was on finding a problem and solution within the chosen theme.  Key factors in the project was research, rapid prototyping, visual design, branding, color theory, typography, iconography, and front-end development.

CHALLENGE

Maintaining a simple outlook to create the minimum viable product for both app and landing page; while building a trusted brand and only having 3 days to code the landing page.

PROCESS

Due to the open-ended nature of the project and short timeframe, time management and objectivity was vital to identifying the problem and executing the adequate fidelity deliverables.

I created and designed an app that allows you to follow people based on their taste in food. People can share their dinning experiences with their followers. The concept is to "follow" people who eat out at the same places you do. So, it is more likely that they like the same food you do and dislike the food you dislike. When they go out and eat somewhere new you will be able to see what they rated that restaurant and look at pictures of their food. The application would also be able to record your past experiences at restaurants and allow you to recommend a restaurant to your friends.

The problem that Foodly solves is that of people who read highly rated reviews of a restaurant but when they eat there the food is nothing like what they expected. The app would connect you to a network of people who have the same taste in food. People are more trusting in a review or recommendation of a friend than a stranger.

Focusing on iconography.

First iteration of color scheme.

Taking note of salmon colors to relate app to food.

Annotating and modifying app according to research.

I first approached this project by conducting a series of inquires about travel. As I had first choose to go with the theme of travel. The more I researched the more evident it became that people were frustrated with the inability to trust strangers' restaurant reviews. Many had been "mislead" by the reviews describing excellent quality food. Only to go to the restaurant and spend money in unsatisfying food. This is when I pivoted from travel to food themed app. By using wireframes and rapid prototyping I was able to create this idea and build a low fidelity interface for a user flow. The idea and prototype was presented to a design panel after the first week. The goal was to develop a landing page based on their critiques. I then had a week and a half to create a higher fidelity prototype to have visible on the coded landing page.

Last mood board that inspired the final color palette.

Exploring different salmon colors to maximize connection to food.

One of the iterations of the landing page.

I wanted to create a new brand for the Foodly mobile application through the website landing page. The design concept was to utilize the white space and place an emphasis on the mockup prototype photographs. The landing page was to be an extension of the simplicity of the app. Awareness of hierarchy between modules became apparent with proximity and alignment. The clean crisp colors and white space highlights the notion of a trustworthy business.

SOLUTION
Application landing page.

Paper prototype for the first part of the project.

Screenshot of coded landing page.

An app that allows foodies to connect with other foodies and share their love for food; all while creating a trusting and reliable community. An app and lading page with a trustworthy taste.

The app would connect you to a network of people who have the same taste in food. People are more trusting in a review or recommendation of a friend than a stranger.
